Special collections materials are collected in the traditional sense in that they are collected to fit a certain collecting scope (see below). Special collections do not circulate and can be viewed in the Special Collections reading room. Searching the Library Catalog is the best way to locate individual items.

Mormon History and Studies

The Mormon History and Studies Collection offers a selection of titles on topics related to the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The collection consists of more recent titles on historical subjects, as well as older items related to the history of the Church and its people. Older works in the collection are those typically created by the Church and its members

History of Idaho

Upper Snake River Valley

The purpose of the Upper Snake River Collection is to support the academic curriculum of BYU-Idaho through the collection of representative texts on or from the Upper Snake River Valley Geographic Region. The collection supports undergraduate research.

The USRV collection is a collection of printed works that document the history, politics, and people in the region. It also contains works by selected authors from the USRV.

Printing History

The printing history collection is designed to aid in the understanding of the Iraon Acorn Press and the hisorical processes involved in its development and use, as well as other historical practices that inform printing generally.

Education

The Education Collection consists primarily of educational books and primers used in teaching throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

The Greater Yelowstone Ecosystem collection consists of  books, pamphlets, brochures and other material on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Whileemphasis in collecting is on the Yellowstne National Park, additional materials help to understand the human and natural  history of the region.

Literature and Historical Reference

The Literature and Historical Reference collection consists primarily of reference works that are considered historically valuable. These works are particularly useful to supplementing the History of Writing collection, and provide histroiography to many of the items in that collection.

Campus Author

Campus Author Collection is designed to support the academic curriculum and community of scholars of BYU-Idaho through the collection of works published by employees of BYU-Idaho. The Campus Author Collection consists of published monographs in order to document publishing efforts of faculty and staff.

Caxton Press

The Caxton Press Collection consists of materials printed by the Caxton Press from Caldwell, Idaho. The Caxton Press began publishing works on the Western United States in 1925, with the aim to promote writers and topics from the  region. Many of the titles in the Caxton Press Collection feature topics of interest to Idaho history and culture as well as the greater region.  

Scripture

Scripture

The Scripture collection contains primarily scriptures unique to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It also includes a number of historical Bibles that represent significant editions inthe histroy of Bible printing. 

Music Collection

Hinckley Music

Thomas Hinckley collected hymnals from a number of faith traditions over the years and donated them to the school. They have been included with the existing hymnal collection which highlights religious musical works and hymn books from many religions and time periods.
